Experienced by most people as static interference on radios or TVs during thunderstorms, electromagnetic (EM) waves from lightning strikes are so powerful that they can be detected from as far away as 120 miles. They are the footprints that lightning detection networks use to geolocate lightning strikes. EM waves can induce very large electric potentials that destroy electronic equipment. They are the principal cause of lightning related power failures on power distribution lines. EM waves from nearby lightning strikes go right through the nonconductive body of a fiberglass tank and induce potentials onto any metallic components within the tank. This can trigger hazardous sparking. If the tank contains combustible vapors in the vicinity of any sparking metallic components, fires become inevitable.
Although it looks like a birdcage, the EM Shield by Lightning Electrotechnologies is actually a series of vertical loops with spacing and a conductor thickness specifically selected to suppress the electric field inside the tank under the effects of nearby lightning strikes and it additionally employs the patented Streamer Inhibiting Conductor. Furthermore if struck directly, the EM Shield will act as a Faraday Cage and the lightning current will be distributed around the tank in such a way as to make the lightning induced electric field inside the tank negligible.
